When you are outdoors, you might find yourself in a situation where you must have some survival skills up your sleeve. Every environment is different and those who hike or backpack, or even camp, must be aware of the area and know some tips and tricks that can help them survive if the need ever arises. Here, we will go over some tips and tricks, as well as items you need that could help you the next time you are enjoying the outdoors.
Survival Items You NeedBelow are some items you may need in case you are in a survival situation. This is not a comprehensive list, but rather some of the main items you should bring along with you.
KnivesA knife can be used for a multitude of purposes in the wild. Having an EDC knife is helpful because it has a decent blade size, and is easy to carry around. The best EDC knife has various blade styles to choose from, with a Tanto blade that is thick, with 2 kinds of edges. Sturdy and long lasting, they will work for years to come!
Fire StarterYou should bring along some waterproof matches and a lighter so you can start a fire. You can use nearby tinder and dry logs around your campsite to start the fire and keep it going. Using rocks around your fire is best, so it does not spread. Never leave a fire unattended and always keep a bucket of water to put the fire out. Do not leave the area until you know the fire is completely put out.
Emergency FoodHaving a 3-day stash of emergency food is helpful in case you find yourself in a situation where you are lost or in need of assistance somehow. Having food will keep your body going, especially with protein filled food.
Clean WaterThere are many ways to get clean water, from filtering to using purification tablets. If you find a water source, you will be able to stay alive longer, as the body can only live a short time without water, but can live a lot longer without food. Never drink dirty water, as there are bacteria, parasites and more in it that can cause you to become ill.
First Aid KitAlways take a first aid kit with you if you are going to be in the wild for several days or more. Your first aid kit should consist of pain reliever, creams and ointments for burns and more, bandages and gauze for bleeding, and some other items you may need, like your own medication.
Proper ClothingThe weather can get cold in some areas at night, so besides having a sleeping bag, you will want to bring along proper clothing. Having a base layer, mid layer and top layer of clothing will ensure you stay warm and do not get frostbite, or get sick. Flannel and fleece are warm fabrics that will work in the outdoors.

Make a Fire SignalCollect pine and spruce leaves and set them on fire using twigs and other tinder to get it started. These leaves give off a lot of smoke, that can hopefully alert someone to send help your way. You can add other items that produce thick smoke like paper, dry grass, and little sticks.
Find the North StarIf you have no compass, you can tell where the North Star is by using a regular watch to do so. Point the shorthand toward the sun, and make 2 lines between that point and the 12 o’clock point. Bisect that angle and the line that points away is where North is, as the sun always sets in the west.
Toothpaste for Bug BitesToothpaste is known for brushing teeth, but it can be used for some burns and cuts. This is because it helps to soothe pain or any itch that a bug bite might give you. It also reduces swelling from bug bites! Keep a small tube of it in your first aid kit as a cheap way to stop itching.
Willow Bark as AspirinIf you happen across a willow tree, you can take some of the bark to help you with a head cold or a headache. If you are allergic to aspirin or have been told by a doctor not to take it, then stay away from this method. Otherwise, you chew on some willow bark for some relief.
Medicine in NatureLearn about plants and trees that might be in the area where you plan to camp. Some plants can help with wounds, cuts, or other lacerations. For example, crab apples can be used as an astringent for scrapes. Pine resin is a good antiseptic. You can use these orally or topically. Both must be melted before using them.
Sleep ElevatedSleeping on the ground makes your body lose heat faster, which can keep your body cold and cause you to get sick. Stack up some leaves or logs and make a bed with some padding. You can also bring along a hammock to sleep in and set it up between 2 trees. They are light in weight and pack easily so you do not have to worry about bringing a big tent in warmer weather. You can find them in a huge variety as well.
